Scared? Don't Be. Here is Exactly What Happens on Your First Driving Lesson in Birmingham.

January 20, 2026

The night before your first driving lesson is always the worst.

You’re lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, and your brain is playing a horror movie on repeat. You imagine getting into the car, losing control immediately, and crashing into a bus on Broad Street.

We get it. We really do.

At Newbie Driving School, we teach hundreds of beginners across Birmingham every year. And I can promise you one thing: The fear is worse than the reality.

Most people think we’re going to pick you up and instantly shout, "Right, drive to the Bullring!"

That is absolutely not happening.

To help you sleep a bit better tonight, here is a literal step-by-step walkthrough of what actually happens in that first hour. No surprises. No shouting. Just driving.

Step 1: The Pickup (We drive, not you)

When we knock on your door—whether you’re at home in Sutton Coldfield, uni halls in Selly Oak, or finishing work in Digbeth—we don't expect you to drive.

You’ll get in the passenger seat.

Your instructor will drive you to what we call a "Nursery Road." This is a quiet, wide, flat road with hardly any traffic. In Birmingham, we have loads of these hidden spots.

If we pick you up in Edgbaston, we might go to the quiet roads near the Calthorpe Estate.

If you’re in Solihull, we might head to a quiet industrial estate on a weekend.

We do this so you don't have to worry about vans and buses whizzing past you while you’re trying to figure out which pedal is the brake.

Step 2: The Cockpit Drill (Getting comfy)

Once we are parked up safely, we swap seats. You get in the driver’s seat.

This is where we do the "Cockpit Drill" (DSSSM). It sounds technical, but it just means setting up the Doors, Seat, Steering, Seatbelt, and Mirrors.

Because we only use fully qualified DVSA-approved instructors, our cars are fitted with dual controls. This means on your side you have pedals, and on our side, we have pedals too. If you panic, we can stop the car instantly. You are never on your own.

Step 3: Moving Off and Stopping

This is the moment. The engine is on.

We aren't going to try parallel parking or 70mph dual carriageways. The goal of lesson one is simple: Get the car moving, and make the car stop.

We’ll teach you how to find the "biting point" with the clutch if you’re in a manual. You’ll move the car forward ten yards at walking pace, and then pull over and stop.

That’s it.

Real Life Story: We had a student last week, Sarah from Kings Heath. She was shaking like a leaf. She stalled the car four times in a row trying to move off. She apologized every single time. "I'm so sorry, I'm rubbish at this!"

You know what we did? We laughed about it, reset the car, and on the fifth try, she moved off perfectly. It's normal to stall. We don't shout. We just try again.

Step 4: Turning Left (Maybe)

If you master moving off and stopping quickly, we might try a few left turns.

Why left? Because turning left is easier than turning right (you don't have to cross traffic). We’ll drive around a quiet "block" in a residential area. You’ll be doing about 10mph.

We won't go near the Middleway or the Aston Expressway. If we see a scary junction approaching, the instructor will talk you through exactly what to do, or they will take control of the pedals to help you out.

Step 5: The Drive Home

Unless you are a natural born racer, you probably won't drive yourself home on the first lesson.

Why? because by the end of the hour, your brain will be tired from concentrating so hard. We usually swap seats again. The instructor drives you back to your house or college, debriefs you on how well you did (you’ll be surprised!), and books your next slot.

The "Newbie" Guarantee

Look, driving in Birmingham can be intense eventually. But your first lesson shouldn't be.

We chose our name Newbie Driving School because we specialize in this exact moment—the nervous beginning. We don't care if you stall. We don't care if you forget which is left and right.

We just want to get you comfortable behind the wheel.
